The Feynman CLI provides a robust, open-source command-line interface dedicated to conducting autonomous AI-driven research. By executing directly from the terminal, it accepts a research prompt and autonomously scours numerous web sources, documentation, and papers. It seamlessly compiles scattered technical data into unified, easily comprehensible research briefs and summaries. Software engineers, students, and technical researchers seeking an open-source, terminal-native assistant to automate deep topical research. It specifically targets power users who demand rapid insights without the friction of manual web browsing.

  • Command-line interface: Delivers a comprehensive autonomous research experience executing entirely within the terminal.
  • Automated web scraping: Autonomously navigates and extracts critical data from highly relevant technical sources and databases.
  • Deep synthesis: Parses and rewrites complex, multi-source topics into clear, digestible, and cited educational summaries.
  • Open-source core: Allows researchers to fully inspect and modify the underlying agentic reasoning and execution logic.
  • Simple installation: Provides a highly streamlined, single-command installation script tailored for UNIX systems.
  • Specialized sub-agents: Deploys dedicated agents for evidence gathering, internal critique, structured drafting, and rigorous citation verification.

Where teams use it

Accelerated learning

Using the CLI to rapidly gather and summarize the core concepts and architectural patterns of an unfamiliar technology stack.

Documentation gathering

Autonomously collecting and synthesizing scattered API endpoints and community usage examples into a single coherent document.

Background research

Running the agent in a dedicated terminal pane to compile context on a bug while actively debugging the code in another pane.

Terminal-centric workflows

Keeping all research, drafting, and development tasks completely contained within the CLI, deliberately avoiding browser distractions.

Install

macOS / Linux:

curl -fsSL https://feynman.is/install | bash

Windows (PowerShell):

irm https://feynman.is/install.ps1 | iex

Or with npm and Node.js 22.22 or newer: npm install -g @companion-ai/feynman.

Then sign in to a model provider:

feynman setup

The installation guide covers pinned versions, uninstalling, and the skills-only bundle for Codex and OpenCode. The setup guide covers local models and editors such as Zed.

Use

feynman "what do we know about scaling laws"
feynman lit "RLHF alternatives"
feynman deepresearch "mechanistic interpretability"
Workflow What it does
/deepresearch <topic> Planned investigation with parallel researchers and citation checks
/lit <topic or lab> Literature review: consensus, disagreements, open questions
/review <paper or draft> Critique with severity levels and a revision plan
/audit <paper> Paper claims compared with its public code
/replicate <paper> Replication plan; runs only after you choose an environment
/recipe <task> Ranked ML training recipes with datasets and code
/compare <topic> Source comparison matrix
/draft <topic> Paper-style draft from research findings
/autoresearch <idea> Bounded experiment loop against a benchmark
/summarize <source> Summary of a paper, repository, or PDF

Results are saved to outputs/ (drafts to papers/). /lit, /deepresearch, and /recipe also write a provenance file listing the sources used and what was verified.

Sources

Feynman searches alphaXiv, Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, arXiv, PubMed, Europe PMC, bioRxiv, medRxiv, Crossref, the web, and Hugging Face, and reads local PDFs and documents. Free OPENALEX_API_KEY and SEMANTIC_SCHOLAR_API_KEY keys avoid the shared rate limits. It runs on stock Pi with four research agents: researcher, verifier, reviewer, and writer.

Telemetry

Feynman sends anonymous usage data to PostHog: commands, workflows, tools, models, token counts, and errors with their messages and stack traces (your home folder shown as ~). It never sends prompts, model output, paper content, or tool arguments. Turn it off with FEYNMAN_TELEMETRY=off. What is sent

    ## v0.5.22 - 2026-10-01 - **Launch warnings and the first-run telemetry notice show inside the session.** Feynman printed them to the terminal just before starting Pi, where Pi 1.0's fullscreen interface (coming in a later Feynman release) hides them for the whole session. They now appear in Pi's own interface: the Windows "No Bash found" warning, the small-local-model warning for research workflows, and the one-time telemetry disclosure. A one-shot `--prompt` run still prints them to stderr. - `feynman doctor` reports Pi's new `quietStartup: "header"` setting as "header only" instead of "disabled".

    ## v0.5.21 - 2026-10-01 - **LiteLLM and custom providers that read their key from an environment variable work again.** Since Pi 0.99, `models.json` resolves an environment variable only when written as `$NAME`; a bare name is sent as the key itself. Feynman's LiteLLM setup wrote `LITELLM_MASTER_KEY`, so requests went out as `Authorization: Bearer LITELLM_MASTER_KEY` and the proxy rejected them, and custom providers set up with a variable name broke the same way. Feynman now writes `$NAME`, and on start rewrites any `apiKey` in `models.json` that is a bare all-caps variable name, such as `LITELLM_MASTER_KEY`, to `$LITELLM_MASTER_KEY`. Literal keys, placeholders such as `local`, and `!command` values are left alone.

  3. v0.5.20v0.5.20Oct 1, 202618 downloads

    ## v0.5.20 - 2026-10-01 - **Settings saved by Windows Notepad or PowerShell no longer stop Feynman.** Both can save UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, which JSON parsing rejects, so Feynman refused to start with "Invalid Feynman settings ... expected a JSON object", and other commands read the file as empty. Feynman now ignores the mark in `settings.json`, `auth.json`, and `web-search.json`, as Pi does. A settings file with a real JSON error now names the error, for example a trailing comma, instead of the generic message.

  4. v0.5.19v0.5.19Oct 1, 2026105 downloads

    ## v0.5.19 - 2026-10-01 - **Word drafts open without LibreOffice.** `document_parse` needs LibreOffice for `.docx` files, which most machines lack, so reviewing a thesis or draft in Word format failed. When LibreOffice is missing, Feynman now reads the document's paragraph text directly from the `.docx` and says so; install LibreOffice for page layout, tables, footnotes, and images. - `feynman_science_database_search` accepts the `"null"` some models send for an omitted `sort` or `limit`, which failed validation before the search ran. - **Pi 0.99.2** (faster prompt submission in long sessions; saved default models with extension providers load reliably), **pi-subagents 0.74.0**, and **pi-btw 0.7.0**. pi-subagents now ships the patched undici 8.10.2, so the undici security exceptions and Feynman's own undici pin are gone. It removed the `workflowScript` parameter; `/deepresearch` and `/summarize` now write the workflow script to `outputs/.plans/<slug>-workflow.js` and run it by path. Its other new form, an inline ```` ```js workflow ```` block, failed in testing when Claude put the block in its hidden reasoning, while a script file worked with every model, and the file stays next t

    ## v0.5.18 - 2026-09-30 - **A rate-limited paper index no longer ends a research step.** When Semantic Scholar is rate-limited or down, a search is answered from OpenAlex, and an OpenAlex topic search that hits OpenAlex's anonymous rate limit or an outage is answered from Semantic Scholar. The result says first which index answered and why. Lookups by OpenAlex ID, DOI, author, venue, or citation still report the error, since the other index has no equivalent. - **alphaXiv tools answer when alphaXiv cannot.** If your alphaXiv login expired or alphaXiv does not respond, `alpha_search` returns OpenAlex semantic search results and `alpha_get_paper` returns the arXiv metadata and abstract for an arXiv ID, each marked as a fallback. Run `feynman alpha login` to get alphaXiv's reports back. - pi-web-access 0.35.0: OpenAI web search works when you signed in with ChatGPT (`feynman model login openai`), and Brave search keeps to its rate limits. The researcher is told to pass a search provider as a plain string, since some models sent `provider: "[\"parallel-mcp\"]"`, which `web_search` rejects; nicobailon/pi-web-access#491 makes `web_search` accept that form too.
