What OpenSwarm does

OpenSwarm is a robust, open-source framework designed to orchestrate multiple specialized AI agents to solve complex tasks. Users provide a single prompt in their terminal, and the system coordinates a swarm of up to 8 distinct agents to generate comprehensive deliverables, such as slide decks, research reports, or data visualizations. It serves as an open, customizable alternative to proprietary systems like Claude Code, focusing on end-to-end task completion without requiring a complex UI or platform setup. The architecture is entirely local and highly extensible, allowing developers to add custom agents or modify existing workflows.

Developers, researchers, and power users who want a powerful, local, multi-agent system to automate complex digital tasks without relying on closed-source platforms.

  • Multi-agent orchestration: Coordinates 8 specialized agents working in tandem to complete multi-faceted tasks.
  • Single-prompt execution: Generates complex deliverables (like presentations or codebases) from one initial user command.
  • Terminal-native interface: Operates entirely from the command line, avoiding the overhead of web UIs or platforms.
  • Fast deployment: Designed for rapid installation (under 30 seconds) and immediate execution.
  • Fully open-source and forkable: Allows users to inspect, modify, and extend the agent behaviors and system architecture.

Where teams use it

Automated research reports

Prompting the swarm to research a topic, aggregate data, and format it into a comprehensive markdown document.

Slide deck generation

Instructing the system to synthesize information and automatically generate the code and content for a presentation.

Complex data visualization

Tasking the agents to analyze a dataset, write the necessary Python scripts, and produce formatted charts.

Custom workflow automation

Forking the repository to add proprietary agents tailored to specific enterprise processes or workflows.

Getting started: Clone the repo, follow the 30-second installation guide in the README, and run your first prompt from the terminal.

💡 What Makes This Different?

Instead of one agent trying to do everything poorly, you get specialists coordinated by an orchestrator.

🎯 Real Examples

Paste these into your terminal and watch magic happen:

  • "Create a complete investor pitch for OpenSwarm" → Full deck + executive summary + market research
  • "Research my top 5 competitors and write 3 SEO-optimized blog posts" → Competitive analysis + keyword research + publish-ready content
  • "Analyze this data and create a quarterly report with charts" → Data insights + visualizations + formatted document
  • "Generate a product launch video with animations" → Professional video with graphics and transitions
  • "Build me a marketing campaign for Q2" → Strategy doc + creative assets + implementation timeline

Connect to 10,000+ external services (Gmail, Slack, GitHub, HubSpot) via Composio for even more power.

🤖 Meet Your AI Team

Agent What it does
Orchestrator Routes every user request to the right specialist(s). Never answers directly — pure coordination.
Virtual Assistant Handles everyday tasks: writing, scheduling, messaging, task management. Gains 10,000+ external integrations via Composio (Gmail, Slack, GitHub, HubSpot, and more).
Deep Research Conducts comprehensive, evidence-based web research with citations and balanced analysis.
Data Analyst Analyses structured data, builds charts, runs statistical models — all inside an isolated IPython kernel.
Slides Agent Generates complete, visually polished HTML slide decks, then exports them to PPTX.
Docs Agent Creates formatted Word documents and PDFs from outlines or raw content.
Image Generation Agent Generates and edits images using Gemini 2.5 Flash Image / Gemini 3 Pro Image and fal.ai.
Video Generation Agent Produces videos via Sora (OpenAI), Veo (Google), and Seedance (fal.ai); also edits and combines clips.

📦 Get Started in 30 Seconds

npx @vrsen/openswarm

That's it! The setup wizard handles everything: authentication, dependencies, and configuration.

Requirements: Node.js 20+ and Python 3.12+. OpenSwarm creates or repairs an isolated project .venv.

Telemetry opt-out: set ENABLE_TELEMETRY=0, OPEN_SWARM_TELEMETRY=0, AGENTSWARM_TELEMETRY=0, or pass --no-telemetry.

🔧 Build Your Own Swarm

Fork this repo and create your own specialized AI team in minutes:

git clone https://github.com/VRSEN/openswarm.git
cd openswarm

Then tell Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex:

"Turn this into an SEO optimization swarm"

They'll automatically customize all agents for your use case.

Popular custom swarms:

  • SEO Swarm: Keyword research + competitor analysis + blog writing
  • Sales Swarm: Lead research + outreach + proposal generation
  • Marketing Swarm: Campaign planning + creative assets + analytics
  • Product Swarm: Market research + feature specs + launch materials

⚙️ API Keys & Setup

The setup wizard walks you through everything, but you'll need at least one of these:

Required (choose one):

  • OPENAI_API_KEY - For GPT 5.5 and Sora video generation
  • ANTHROPIC_API_KEY - For Claude models

Optional superpowers:

  • COMPOSIO_API_KEY - Unlock 10,000+ integrations (Gmail, Slack, GitHub, etc.)
  • GOOGLE_API_KEY - Gemini image generation + Veo video
  • FAL_KEY - Advanced video editing and effects
  • SEARCH_API_KEY - Web search for research agent

Tools gracefully degrade when keys are missing — you'll get clear instructions on what to add.

🚀 Coming Soon

  • Agent Builder Agent - Create custom swarms from a single prompt
  • OpenClaw + Claude Code integration - All agents in one place

Agent Builder learns to plan before it builds. ## Agent Builder: Build asks Plan first - When Build receives a vague or underspecified swarm request, it now proposes switching to Plan: a Yes/No dialog offers to clarify requirements and create the plan first, then returns to Build for implementation. - Plan runs a structured flow for new swarm work: extend the current swarm or create a standalone agency, an explicit output location before any files are created, and MCP/API discovery with the options presented for you to choose. - New standalone agencies set up their `.env` safely: you are asked before existing keys are copied, and otherwise get a template naming exactly which keys to fill. Thanks to @ArtemShatokhin for the feature. ## Composio - Composio connection management and tool search now use Composio's session-based API, matching their latest platform change. Thanks to @ArtemShatokhin for the fix. ## Install ```bash npx @vrsen/openswarm ``` Already installed? The same command picks up 1.1.3 automatically. [Full changelog](https://github.com/VRSEN/OpenSwarm/compare/v1.1.2...v1.1.3)

  2. v1.1.2v1.1.2Jul 17, 202635 downloads

Patch release picking up AgentSwarm 1.4.42. ## Fixes ### Visible update prompts - Update checks now compare the OpenSwarm product version instead of the embedded terminal version. Bigger releases show an **Update Available** prompt; patches keep updating quietly. An equal or lower registry version never triggers an update. ### Clearer startup errors - When an agency project fails to start, a notification now explains that the startup error was placed in your message box — press Enter to have Build fix the project. Previously the error text appeared in the composer with no explanation. ## Install ```bash npx @vrsen/openswarm ``` [Full changelog](https://github.com/VRSEN/OpenSwarm/compare/v1.1.1...v1.1.2)

  3. v1.1.1v1.1.1Jul 17, 202624 downloads

Patch release fixing the first issues reported against 1.1.0. ## Fixes ### Composio works again - Composio tool execution failed on every fresh 1.1.0 install with `Tools.execute() got an unexpected keyword argument 'dangerously_skip_version_check'`. The bundled Composio client was pinned below the version the integration was written for; the pins now match (`composio` 0.15.0), and execution adapts to whichever client version is already installed. - Composio keys added through `/addons` mid-session are picked up by later tool calls — no restart needed. - The documented Composio call example used a wrong parameter name and now works as written. ### Same-turn chained handoffs - With agents wired A → B → C, asking A to hand off to B and then immediately to C stalled at B, because B did not receive its handoff tools until the next message. A → B → A patterns were equally affected. Fixed in Agency Swarm 1.10.5, which this release pins. ## Install ```bash npx @vrsen/openswarm ``` Already installed? OpenSwarm is an open-source AI agent team that lives in your terminal. Version 1.1.0 is the first stable release of its biggest upgrade yet: you can now design, build, and run your own multi-agent swarms from a single command — using OpenAI models, the whole model market through OpenRouter, or fully local models through Ollama. ## Install ```bash npx @vrsen/openswarm ``` One command installs the terminal, prepares an isolated Python environment, and starts your agent team. Python 3.12+ and Node.js 20+ are required. Already on an earlier version? Run the same command again to get 1.1.0. ## Agent Builder Turn a plain-English idea into a working agent swarm without leaving the terminal. - Use `/agents` to switch between **Plan**, **Build**, and **Run** modes. - **Plan** designs the swarm with you first — agents, tools, and how they hand work to each other — before anything is created. - **Build** creates the agents, their instructions, and their tools in your project. - **Run** puts the finished swarm to work, with live agent, handoff, usage, and cost status as it runs. - If a project fails to start, the full error stays on screen and OpenSwarm opens the right recovery path — fi

  5. v1.0.1-rc.10v1.0.1-rc.10Jul 14, 2026pre-release24 downloads

OpenSwarm v1.0.1-rc.10 updates the bundled terminal experience to [AgentSwarm CLI 1.4.40](https://github.com/VRSEN/agentswarm-cli/releases/tag/v1.4.40). It adds Agent Builder Plan, Build, and Run modes through `/agents`; opens Build with the real startup error when a detected agency fails to import or start; opens Connect when no agencies are discovered; and shows clearer startup, model, swarm/agent, handoff, usage, and cost status. OpenSwarm also adds live Slides previews, fixes OpenRouter-backed Slides generation, defaults OpenAI/Codex agents to `gpt-5.4`, removes the stale Python onboarding wizard, preserves telemetry opt-out, and adds validated GitHub marketplace/fork attribution to AgentSwarm telemetry. ## What's Changed * Update add-on key guidance to use `/addons` by @nicko-ai in https://github.com/VRSEN/OpenSwarm/pull/61 * Default OpenAI/Codex agents to `gpt-5.4` and remove the stale Python onboarding wizard by @nicko-ai in https://github.com/VRSEN/OpenSwarm/pull/62 * Fix a typo in shared agent instructions by @DevSidd2006 in https://github.com/VRSEN/OpenSwarm/pull/30 * Add live, auto-opening Slides preview support by @ArtemShatokhin in https://github.com/VRSEN/
