What deno does

Deno is a modern runtime that provides a highly secure execution environment out of the box. By denying network, file, and environment access by default, it enforces explicit permission grants before executing untrusted code. It consolidates the tooling ecosystem by providing built-in formatting, linting, and testing tools. Powered by the V8 JavaScript engine, Rust, and Tokio, it delivers high performance and concurrent execution. The runtime natively supports TypeScript without requiring a separate compilation step.

Deno is designed for modern web developers who prioritize security and developer experience. It is ideal for teams looking to streamline their toolchain by removing complex transpilation and configuration steps.

  • Secure by default: Enforces explicit permission flags for file, network, and environment access.
  • Native TypeScript support: Executes TypeScript files directly without a manual compilation step.
  • Built-in tooling: Provides a comprehensive toolchain including a linter, formatter, and test runner.
  • Web API compatibility: Implements standard web APIs such as fetch and WebSockets for isomorphic code.
  • Package management: Resolves dependencies directly from URLs, eliminating the need for a package.json file.
  • High performance: Leverages Rust and Tokio to handle concurrent operations efficiently.
  • Standard Library: Offers a robust set of audited utilities curated by the core team.

Where teams use it

Building Web Servers

Developers use Deno to build secure web APIs and microservices quickly without configuring transpilers.

Scripting Automation

Engineers leverage Deno as a modern shell scripting alternative using TypeScript for robust automation.

Edge Computing

Organizations deploy lightweight Deno functions to edge locations due to its fast startup times and web standard APIs.

Isomorphic Web Development

Teams share code between the client and server effortlessly by relying on standard web APIs.

Deno (/ˈdiːnoʊ/, pronounced dee-no) is a JavaScript, TypeScript, and WebAssembly runtime with secure defaults and a great developer experience. It's built on V8, Rust, and Tokio.

Learn more about the Deno runtime in the documentation.

Installation

Install the Deno runtime on your system using one of the commands below. Note that there are a number of ways to install Deno - a comprehensive list of installation options can be found here.

Shell (Mac, Linux):

curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | sh

PowerShell (Windows):

irm https://deno.land/install.ps1 | iex

Homebrew (Mac):

brew install deno

Chocolatey (Windows):

choco install deno

WinGet (Windows):

winget install --id=DenoLand.Deno

Scoop (Windows):

scoop install main/deno

Build and install from source

Complete instructions for building Deno from source can be found here.

Your first Deno program

Deno can be used for many different applications, but is most commonly used to build web servers. Create a file called server.ts and include the following TypeScript code:

Deno.serve((_req: Request) => {
  return new Response("Hello, world!");
});

Run your server with the following command:

deno run --allow-net server.ts

This should start a local web server on http://localhost:8000.

Learn more about writing and running Deno programs in the docs.
