What onyx does

Onyx provides a feature-rich, self-hostable interface for interacting with Large Language Models. It connects to over 50 data sources via built-in connectors and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to provide high-quality Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and multi-step 'Deep Research' reports. The platform supports building custom AI agents with unique knowledge and actions, executing code in sandboxed environments, and generating artifacts. It is built for enterprise deployment, supporting SSO, RBAC, and comprehensive usage analytics.

Enterprises, IT administrators, and teams looking to self-host a secure, scalable AI interface with robust knowledge retrieval and agent capabilities.

  • Agentic RAG: Combines hybrid indexing (vector + keyword) with AI agents for highly accurate internal information retrieval.
  • Deep Research: Executes autonomous, multi-step research flows to generate comprehensive, cited reports.
  • Enterprise Ready: Includes out-of-the-box support for SSO (SAML/OIDC), Role-Based Access Control, and detailed audit logging.
  • Code Execution: Runs code securely within a sandbox to analyze retrieved data, render graphs, or modify files.
  • Universal Connectors: Integrates seamlessly with external data sources and applications via 50+ built-in connectors and MCP.

Where teams use it

Internal Knowledge Search

Enterprise teams connect Onyx to Jira, Slack, and internal wikis to provide employees with instant, cited answers to company policies.

Automated Deep Research

Analysts use the deep research feature to aggregate and synthesize data across dozens of web sources into a single report.

Custom Agent Deployment

Departments build specialized AI agents restricted to specific data silos (e.g., HR policies) using strict RBAC controls.

Secure Data Analysis

Data scientists use the code execution sandbox to have the LLM write and run Python scripts against proprietary CSVs safely.

🚀 Deployment Modes

Onyx supports deployments in Docker, Kubernetes, Helm/Terraform and provides guides for major cloud providers. Detailed deployment guides found here.

Onyx supports two separate deployment options: standard and lite.

Onyx Lite

The Lite mode can be thought of as a lightweight Chat UI. It requires less resources (under 1GB memory) and runs a less complex stack. It is great for users who want to test out Onyx quickly or for teams who are only interested in the Chat UI and Agents functionalities.

Standard Onyx

The complete feature set of Onyx which is recommended for serious users and larger teams. Additional components not included in Lite mode:

  • Vector + Keyword index for RAG.
  • Background containers to run job queues and workers for syncing knowledge from connectors.
  • AI model inference servers to run deep learning models used during indexing and inference.
  • Performance optimizations for large scale use via in memory cache (Redis) and blob store (MinIO).

🏢 Onyx for Enterprise

Onyx is built for teams of all sizes, from individual users to the largest global enterprises:

  • 👥 Collaboration: Share chats and agents with other members of your organization.
  • 🔐 Single Sign On: SSO via Google OAuth, OIDC, or SAML. Group syncing and user provisioning via SCIM.
  • 🛡️ Role Based Access Control: RBAC for sensitive resources like access to agents, actions, etc.
  • 📊 Analytics: Usage graphs broken down by teams, LLMs, or agents.
  • 🕵️ Query History: Audit usage to ensure safe adoption of AI in your organization.
  • 💻 Custom code: Run custom code to remove PII, reject sensitive queries, or to run custom analysis.
  • 🎨 Whitelabeling: Customize the look and feel of Onyx with custom naming, icons, banners, and more.

📚 Licensing

There are two editions of Onyx:

  • Onyx Community Edition (CE) is available freely under the MIT license and covers all of the core features for Chat, RAG, Agents, and Actions.
  • Onyx Enterprise Edition (EE) includes extra features that are primarily useful for larger organizations.
