What romm does

Romm is a comprehensive self-hosted platform for managing and playing retro video game collections. It scans local directories for ROM files, automatically fetching rich metadata, cover art, and release information via integrations with databases like IGDB. The application provides a modern, responsive web interface for browsing the library across multiple devices. Crucially, it includes an integrated web-based emulator, allowing users to play their games directly in the browser without installing local emulators. It serves as a personal, private Netflix-style interface for retro gaming.

Retro gaming enthusiasts and home lab owners who want a centralized, accessible way to manage and play their ROM collections. Basic Docker or self-hosting knowledge is required.

  • Automated Metadata Scraping: Fetches high-quality box art, screenshots, and game descriptions from IGDB and Mobygames.
  • Integrated Web Player: Plays classic console games directly in the browser using WebAssembly-based emulators.
  • Cross-Device Synchronization: Syncs save states and play history across desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.
  • Modern Web UI: Offers a beautiful, responsive, and highly customizable interface for browsing large libraries.
  • Multi-System Support: Manages ROMs for dozens of retro consoles and handhelds in a unified interface.
  • Docker Deployment: Easily deployable on home servers and NAS systems via official Docker images.

Where teams use it

Home Server Game Library

Organizes a massive, messy folder of downloaded ROMs into a clean, easily browsable interface on a local NAS.

Browser-Based Retro Gaming

Allows a user to play their SNES saves during a lunch break on a work computer without installing any software.

Cross-Platform Syncing

Enables starting a game on a desktop PC and continuing the exact save state on a mobile device.

Collection Showcase

Provides a visually impressive way to display a curated collection of classic games to friends.
