What microsandbox does

Microsandbox provides a highly secure, hardware-isolated execution environment leveraging advanced microVM technology to safely run completely untrusted code, AI agents, or arbitrary plugins. It operates entirely locally without requiring a complex setup server or a long-running background daemon, allowing developers to embed the sandbox directly within their applications. It is fully OCI-compatible, meaning it can pull and run standard container images from Docker Hub or any registry, while offering true hardware isolation that standard Docker containers lack. With boot times under 100 milliseconds, it is specifically designed for high-throughput, dynamically generated workloads.

Backend engineers, platform developers, and AI researchers who need to execute untrusted code or agents safely, quickly, and locally. It requires an understanding of containerization and system architecture.

  • Hardware-level isolation: Utilizes highly robust microVM technology to strictly isolate untrusted workloads from the host machine's filesystem and network.
  • Embeddable architecture: Easily spawns new microVMs directly from within application code without relying on a bulky, long-running background daemon.
  • OCI compatibility: Seamlessly pulls and executes standard container images from any OCI registry, integrating perfectly into existing Docker workflows.
  • Sub-millisecond booting: Highly optimized to boot new, completely clean environments in under 100 milliseconds for extreme throughput.
  • Unexploitable secrets: Securely injects necessary API keys into the environment in a way that prevents them from ever leaking out to the host.

Where teams use it

AI agent sandboxing

Developers securely executing highly autonomous, untrusted AI coding agents within a heavily restricted microVM to prevent system damage.

Plugin execution

Platform builders safely running entirely unverified third-party community plugins without risking the core application's stability.

Automated code grading

Educational platforms dynamically spawning hundreds of microVMs per second to securely execute and verify student programming assignments.

Isolated CI jobs

Engineering teams utilizing the rapid boot times to execute thousands of highly isolated integration tests concurrently across different container images.

Getting started: npm install microsandbox

GitHub release Discord Apache 2.0 License

Microsandbox runs untrusted workloads inside fast, local microVMs: AI agents, user code, plugins, CI jobs, dev environments, scrapers, and automation.

  • Hardware Isolation: Hardware-level isolation with microVM technology.
  • Cross Platform: Runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
  • OCI Compatible: Runs standard container images from Docker Hub, GHCR, or any OCI registry.
  • Docker-Like Workflows: Familiar image, command, shell, and volume workflows.
  • Instant Startup: Average boot times1 under 100 milliseconds.
  • Embeddable: Spawn VMs right within your code. No setup server. No long-running daemon.
  • Secrets That Can't Leak: Unexploitable secret keys that never enter the VM.
  • Long-Running: Sandboxes can run in detached mode. Great for long-lived sessions.
  • Agent-Ready: Your agents can create their own sandboxes with our Agent Skills and MCP server.

rocket-darkrocketย ย Getting Started

ย ย Install the SDK

npm i microsandbox                                       # ๐ŸŸฆ TypeScript
cargo add microsandbox # ๐Ÿฆ€ Rust
uv add microsandbox # ๐Ÿ Python
go get github.com/superradcompany/microsandbox/sdk/go    # ๐Ÿน Go

ย ย Install the CLI

Boot a microVM in a single command:

npx microsandbox run debian

Or install the msb command globally:

curl -fsSL https://install.microsandbox.dev | sh        # ๐ŸŽ macOS / ๐Ÿง Linux
irm https://install.microsandbox.dev/windows | iex      # ๐ŸชŸ Windows
ย We also support other package managers โ†’

brew install superradcompany/tap/microsandbox
npm i -g microsandbox
uv tool install microsandbox
cargo install microsandbox

Then you can run msb directly:

msb run debian

Requirements:

  • macOS macOS: Apple Silicon.
  • Linux Linux: KVM enabled.
  • Windows Windows: WHP enabled.

Warning: Microsandbox is still beta software. Expect breaking changes, missing features, and rough edges.

sdk-darksdkย ย SDK

The SDK lets you create and control sandboxes directly from your application. Sandbox.builder("...").create() boots a microVM as a child process. No infrastructure required.

ย ย Run Code in a Sandbox

import { Sandbox } from "microsandbox";

await using sandbox = await Sandbox.builder("my-sandbox")
  .image("python")
  .cpus(1)
  .memory(512)
  .create();

const output = await sandbox.exec("python", [
  "-c",
  "print('Hello from a microVM!')",
]);

console.log(output.stdout());
ย Rust Example โ†’
use microsandbox::Sandbox;

#[tokio::main]
async fn main() -> Result<(), Box<dyn std::error::Error>> {
    let sandbox = Sandbox::builder("my-sandbox")
        .image("python")
        .cpus(1)
        .memory(512)
        .create()
        .await?;

    let output = sandbox
        .exec("python", ["-c", "print('Hello from a microVM!')"])
        .await?;

    println!("{}", output.stdout()?);

    sandbox.stop().await?;

    Ok(())
}
ย Python Example โ†’
import asyncio
from microsandbox import Sandbox

async def main():
    sandbox = await Sandbox.create(
        "my-sandbox",
        image="python",
        cpus=1,
        memory=512,
    )

    output = await sandbox.exec("python", ["-c", "print('Hello from a microVM!')"])

    print(output.stdout_text)

    await sandbox.stop()

asyncio.run(main())
ย Ruby Example โ†’
require "microsandbox"

sandbox = Microsandbox::Sandbox.create(
  "my-sandbox",
  image: "python",
  cpus: 1,
  memory: 512,
  network: {
    allowed_hosts: ["api.openai.com"],
    allowed_ports: [443]
  },
  secrets: [{
    env: "OPENAI_API_KEY",
    value: ENV.fetch("OPENAI_API_KEY"),
    allowed_host: "api.openai.com"
  }]
)

output = sandbox.exec("python", ["-c", "print('Hello from a microVM!')"])
puts output.stdout

sandbox.stop

See the Ruby SDK guide for installation, lifecycle, networking, and backend details.

ย Go Example โ†’
package main

import (
    "context"
    "fmt"
    "log"

    microsandbox "github.com/superradcompany/microsandbox/sdk/go"
)

func main() {
    ctx := context.Background()

    // Downloads the microsandbox runtime to ~/.microsandbox/ on first run.
    if err := microsandbox.EnsureInstalled(ctx); err != nil {
        log.Fatal(err)
    }

    sandbox, err := microsandbox.CreateSandbox(ctx, "my-sandbox",
        microsandbox.WithImage("python"),
        microsandbox.WithCPUs(1),
        microsandbox.WithMemory(512),
    )
    if err != nil {
        log.Fatal(err)
    }
    defer sandbox.Stop(ctx)

    output, err := sandbox.Exec(ctx, "python", []string{"-c", "print('Hello from a microVM!')"})
    if err != nil {
        log.Fatal(err)
    }

    fmt.Println(output.Stdout())
}

The first call to create() pulls the image if it isn't cached locally, so it may take longer depending on your connection. Subsequent runs reuse the cache.

beaker-darkbeakerย ย Examples

Practical ways to put microsandbox to work:

โ€ข Docker in a Sandbox: Run Docker without touching the host daemon.
โ€ข OpenCode: Give a coding agent an isolated project workspace.
โ€ข Playwright: Run headless browser jobs inside a microVM.
โ€ข Warm Workers: Snapshot a toolchain and launch clean workers.
โ€ข Migration Rehearsal: Test a database migration, then restore the baseline.
โ€ข GitHub Actions Runner: Run each self-hosted job in a disposable microVM.
โ€ข Documents to PDF: Convert untrusted documents in a fresh offline worker.
